BRAINSTORMING
Most everyone is familiar with the term brainstorming, but what is it really? Are you doing it correctly? To correctly brainstorm, generating ideas is just not enough. There must be converging with the ideas to get the best option possible. During the end of our course, we brainstormed ways to present SUNY information to our fellow faculty members in the fall semester. Jeannine and I were facilitators during this session. After we had brainstormed presentation ideas using the postit note method with our cohort, we used hits and highlighting to converge on the best plan possible. To tie things up, we created an action plan to prepare ourselves for August!

Classroom applications - I will use brainstorming to list characteristics of good characters or bad characters in writing and to start the school year by brainstorming rules we want as a classroom community. The most important thing to remember is to do something with all of these ideas, or they just become a list of ideas and not real brainstorming.
This video shows a small sample of brainstorming and lists why we have the divergent guidelines. It does miss #4. Encourage Novelty! Instead of the magic sticky board they use, post-it notes work fine as well.
